Our friends at C.A.G.E.D North West are running a petition to outlaw the captive bolt gun to kill greyhounds. This is what they say…

“We are concerned that the Captive bolt gun is NOT used in the best interest of all animals, as in many cases its use is preferred for the destruction of dogs solely due to its being more economically viable for an owner seeking to avoid the expense of appointing a veterinary surgeon to administer an overdose of barbiturates.”

“Things are very bad for us, financially unless things improves it is most likely Cork DAWG will cease to exist within the next few months. We are trying to raise funds but Ireland and animal welfare are not synonymous. In the past few months we have taken in some terrible cases. Our bill is currently at 12,000 (this is a cumulation of two months)
We had Lloyd the lurcher boy, he was picked out of the ditch on a dark night with a rope tied around his neck, he could barely stand he was so emaciated and had that look in his eyes of utter despair. We have had him now for a couple of months and in the interim he needed to have his leg amputated and treatment which cost 700.
We have had blind puppies that needed special treatment, amputations, smashed limbs, xrays, and all the costs that go with that. Between foster and the shelter we have over 80 dogs in our care, and these all need vaxed, flea treatment, worming etc so the bills do mount up.
We constantly say that we need to cut back the numbers, but things are so awful here, the suffering and neglect would break your heart. Saying no means condemning some poor creature to a life of misery and pain so we always try to help and give them some hope.”
